Acne Treatments

Best Skin Clinic in Wales Cardiff Awards 2015Acne can affect both men and women and although it most commonly develops in young teenagers as they go through puberty, Doctor Maria Gonzalez of the Specialist Skin Clinic, Cardiff and London is seeing increasing numbers of older patients that are suffering from adult acne.

How is acne caused?

Acne diagram revised-acne treatmentsEveryone has small holes in the skin that are hair follicles. Underneath the surface of the skin, there are glands which are called sebaceous glands and these produce an oil-type substance called sebum which is essential for ensuring skin and hair doesn’t dry out.

However, if the glands produce too much sebum, which can be triggered by hormones, the sebum can mix with dead skin cells to block the follicles.

What’s the difference between whiteheads, blackheads or acne cysts?

There are all types of acne. Whiteheads are caused when the follicle is blocked just below the surface of the skin, whereas blackheads are when that blocked follicle is open to the skin. If bacteria, which is always present on the skin, infects the blocked follicles it causes cysts, papules or pustules.
